The downtown skyscrapers are in sight, the same image made famous through innumerable TV programs. La Gigante Tropical, 1090 AM, is blaring over the radio at top volume; the hyperactive hosts haven’t stopped talking about yesterday’s earthquake (they insist on defining a5.2 as an “earthquake”) and, between the Flores Brothers cumbias, they check in with their correspondent in El Salvador, who is reporting on the victims and most affected areas.

“Want to take Olvera Street? It’s a gringo thing that tourists do, but some people think it’s funny or sweet. If you want, we could stop for a quick bite on Whittier or El Mercadito…”

“No, thanks, just keep on the freeway. Then take the route I mentioned. Behind Griffith Park and the Zoological Gardens.”

“You know the city well.”

“This part, at least. It’s been a long time since I came here. I’ve got a good memory—”

“The memory of an elephant.”

“Once we’re in the Valley, I guess we could eat something. Do you know a good place?”

“They know me everywhere, señor. What do you feel like at the moment? Some pork rinds, perhaps? Or some little pork tamales? I could take you to that girl Menchita’s place, Mi Casita Salvadoreña on Van Owen, what do you say?”

“It’s your call. Is it good?”

“Very good, and cheap. Their dishes are really tasty. You’ll see, they treat you like a prince there, señor. Guanacos are very hospitable.”
